Our History
The NCCF was established in 1985, when Norfolk’s Laurel School, a non-profit residential school for children with special needs, closed. The Laurel School was operated by Ken and Dottie Satherlie, residents of Norfolk since 1952 and the NCCF was an innovative way to keep the Satherlie family’s dedication to the youth of Norfolk alive once the school closed. It is our strong belief that no Norfolk child should be denied a civic, educational, social or cultural enrichment opportunity because of financial need.
The entire philosophy of the foundation is embedded in the legacy of the Laurel School. It is because of Ken and
Dottie Satherlie’s lifelong desire and commitment to serving children and believing that each and every child could reach their greatest potential through loving support and guidance that the NCCF was born.
Our original endowment, augmented over the years with additional charitable gifts, has grown and with it the Foundation’s capacity to enrich the lives of Norfolk children. To date we have granted hundreds of requests in support of a wide variety of needs.
The Foundation is managed by a six person Board of Directors. The Board meets at least quarterly to review grant requests. Requests are reviewed for adherence with the Foundation’s charter.
